Pine Street Structural Sidewalk and Foundation Restoration

Seattle, WA

  • Architect: JRP Engineers

This unique and challenging project entailed the removal and reconstruction of 150 feet of structural sidewalk located in the busy Pike Place Market district. The existing decaying sidewalk was located directly above the basement of an adjacent occupied building. A simpler cast-in-place structural slab was originally designed, but after careful analysis, MRJ determined that it would be more expeditious and cost-effective to install hollow core planks at the basement area and pre-cast structural slabs at the electrical vault. MRJ’s crews performed the structural work while diverting pedestrian traffic and phasing the process to ensure neighboring businesses and residents would not be affected by the construction.
