The Monkey Building Historic Renovation project

Located on 1st Ave in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood, the Monkey Building project was a complete seismic upgrade and interior renovation of an 11,000 SF flexible event space originally built in the early 1900’s.

The unreinforced masonry & timber framed building was built on poor soil in the tidal flats. To bring the building up to current building code, the project required extensive foundation work including the installation of piling, grade beams, steel brace frames and other seismic upgrades. Other upgrades to the building included a new electrical service, HVAC system, fire sprinkler system and a new roof over a portion of the building.

Reclaimed materials were utilized throughout the building to hide much of the structural work that was done. The renovation also included sandblasting masonry walls, building out bathrooms and setting the infrastructure for a future bar and restaurant.
